Broyles, Lewis' Retrun Has Sooners Thinking Title
Ryan Broyles and Travis Lewis both announced that they are returning to the Oklahoma Sooners for the 2011 season.
Ryan Broyles was uncommitted when asked at the Fiesta Bowl, saying it was not the time to make that decision. He also said in an earlier interview that he has done everything there was to do at Oklahoma.
Travis Lewis said the only reason he would come back was to play for a national championship. The thought process was he was waiting to see what Broyles was going to do.
Travis Lewis didn’t wait for Broyles to make his decision. On Wednesday, Lewis said he was returning to play for the Oklahoma Sooners for one more year.
"I'm coming back to win a national championship, point blank" said Lewis. "Anything else would be a disappointment. That is the main goal. This is a program built on a tradition of championships and I intend on being here for another one."
Lewis has over 100 tackles in each of his first three seasons at Oklahoma and hopes to improve on what he called a “disappointing season.” He currently ranks ninth on the all-time Oklahoma Sooners list for tackles with 362.
"I compliment Travis not only on being a great player, but on making a good decision for his future," said OU Head Coach Bob Stoops in the press release. "He is giving himself the chance to improve his status and opportunity with another year of college ball. He'll work hard physically and he'll have another year of playing experience. All of that will translate well to the NFL."
One day later, Oklahoma Sooners fans got even better news.
"I want to finish my degree. That's very important to me," Broyles said. "We've got a chance to have a very good team next season and I really want to be part of that. I like the guys on the team and the coaches, and feel like there is more we can accomplish. Being at OU means a lot to me, it's a great environment."
While playing for a national championship is the big reason both men are remaining at Oklahoma, the threat of an NFL lockout in 2011 might also have weighed in on their minds.
Another reason for Broyles to remain at Oklahoma is the chance to break one more record.
Ryan Broyles only needs 50 receptions to break the all-time NCAA record.
